Received a degree in philosophy from Fu’ad University (now Cairo University)

Nearly 40 novel length works and hundreds of short stories. Such as Cairo Trilogy, Midaq Alley, Children of Gebelawi

 

Major achievement

1st Arab writer to win the Nobel Prize for Literature

 

 

 

 

 

 

Other Facts:

 

  • -His entire life he only left Egypt twice.
  • -He turned down the opportunity to travel to Stockholm to receive his Nobel prize
  • -He has been compared to Zola, Balzac and Dickens
  • -Mahfouz states that his work revolves around the 3 poles of politics, faith and love
  • -Mahfouz was named after professor Naquib Pasha Mahfouz, the renowned physician that delivered     him
  • -In 1996 he was attacked and stabbed outside his home. He survived the attack but nerves in his right -hand were permanently damaged and was unable to write for more than a few minutes each day
  • -Mahfouz married at the age of 43
  • -Mahfouz was awarded a state funeral with full military honors.
